For more than five decades, the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) has advanced language research, education and preservation. This Hub extends that work into collaborative AI research, with a focus on models, datasets and resources that help people learn, create and participate through their own languages.

Linguistic knowledge as a foundation for AI

Our work connects linguistic research with practical resources:

• Linguistic Data Consortium for Indian Languages (LDC-IL):
  Text, speech and lexical resources, including annotated corpora and benchmarks, for Indian language research and technology.
• National Translation Mission (NTM):
  Knowledge translation across the 22 Scheduled languages, supported by glossaries, terminology resources and translator training.
• Bharatavani:
  Dictionaries, educational content and multilingual knowledge in a digital repository spanning more than 100 languages and dialects.
• Scheme for Protection and Preservation of Endangered Languages (SPPEL):
  Documentation and revitalization of endangered languages through oral traditions, grammars and vocabularies.
• National Testing Service–India (NTS-I):
  Research, assessment frameworks and educator training to strengthen language teaching, learning and evaluation.

Research directions on the Hub

• Speech:
  Recognition, synthesis and language identification across accents, regional varieties and multilingual speech.
• Translation:
  Resources that help knowledge move between Indian languages and widen access to education and services.
• NLP and generative AI:
  Models and datasets attentive to linguistic structure, cultural context and code-mixing.
• Scripts and documents:
  OCR, transliteration and document understanding to make written knowledge searchable and usable.
• Data and evaluation:
  Curated resources and transparent benchmarks that reveal performance across languages, domains and speaker communities.

A digital future with room for every language

A language can hold centuries of knowledge yet remain scarcely represented in AI. We prioritize low-resource, tribal and endangered languages alongside India’s Scheduled languages and wider diversity of mother tongues.

Speakers, educators and linguists help guide resources that reflect how people communicate, so more communities can access learning, research and digital services.
